Our Story

Back in 2007, a small group of people came together to plant a church in Southeast Portland called Hope. Over time, and one relationship at a time, Hope grew, little by little. In 2012 it became officially recognized as a particular church within the Pacific Northwest Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA). After that, Hope continued as a small to medium-sized congregation invested in connecting people to God and one another.

Like so many churches and organizations, Hope experienced significant challenges during, and immediately following the Covid-19 pandemic, and not long after Pastor Charlie joined us in August of 2021, it became clear that our little church, planted in 2007, was due for a significant repotting. Hope is once again a small group of people meeting together in Southeast Portland. We have learned so much about God, our community, as well as ourselves over the last few years. We want to keep learning, and keep growing into a church that truly experiences, practices, and shares the love of God. Our current focus is the work of replanting Hope as church who seeks to value the radically welcoming disposition of Christ toward others, the transformative nature of the historic teachings of orthodox Christianity, and who believes that worshiping God and enjoying him is life’s highest calling.

Our Beliefs

As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, we consider the Bible to be God’s inspired word and believe that he didn’t make any mistakes when he worked with the first people to write down its message. We also believe that we are sinners, which makes it easy to misunderstand and misrepresent the Bible. For this reason, we seek to read, interpret, and teach the Scripture in humility, community, and in open communication with others. Toward this end, we subscribe to the system of doctrine and biblical interpretation expressed in the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, as well as the Westminster Standards.

Our Worship

Our worship service is simple. We have a casual gathering on Sunday mornings. Sometimes people bring coffee or donuts, and we worship using the common historical elements of Christian devotion, such as prayer, music, Bible reading, a sermon, the giving of an offering, and the sharing of our gifts and talents. We use a printed worship guide to stay organized, and we try to avoid getting too novel or complicated. Everyone is welcome.
